A graduate of University of Ottawa, Dr. Chi has dedicated his career to teaching and inspiring the next generation of rural medicine. He acts as an assistant Professor at NOSM and is the lead physician for the Elliot Lake Local Education Group.
In addition to his teaching roles, Dr. Chi has been an anesthesiologist with St. Joesphs General Hospital for majority of his impressive career. A proud citizen of Elliot Lake, Dr. Chi and his wife have raised their 5 children here and enjoy engaging in community events.
As a preceptor Dr. Chi provides a meaningful and unique learning opportunities to his students. He is able to highlight skills in anesthesia, family and emergency medicine. Dr. Chi has inspired countless students to pursue careers in rural medicine by providing an engaging curriculum. He is often described as a knowledgeable and caring preceptor who enjoys guiding the next generation of rural physicians.
University of Melbourne, Queens University
Dr. Long and Dr. Stirling are the surgical team in Elliot Lake that provide services to the North Shore.
During his impressive 45 year career, Dr. Long has spent countless hours dedicated to healthcare in the North. Originally from Australia, he is a graduate of the University of Melbourne and specializes in general surgery.
The second half of Elliot Lake’s surgical team, Dr. Stirling also provides essential care as a general surgeon. A Queen’s University graduate, he has been practicing surgery in Elliot Lake for 15 years.
As long term residents of Elliot Lake, both Dr. Stirling and Dr. Long are vital members of the community. They are able to provide unique and invaluable insights into rural medicine and surgery, cultivated by their time in Elliot Lake.
University of London
Dr. Margetts is a long term resident of Elliot Lake whom operates an obstetrics clinic and is the Director of Care for St. Josephs Manor. A graduate of the University of London, Dr. Margetts has completed an impressive career of over 40 years. He has been a vital member of the Elliot Lake community both as a physician and a citizen over the years. Dr. Margetts continues to be involved in learning and teaching at St. Joesph’s General Hospital as he begins his transition into retirement.
University of Toronto
New to Elliot Lake, Dr. Spencer is a general practitioner with St. Joseph’s General Hospital. With a previous career in Pharmacy, Dr. Spencer now exercises his skills in family medicine, anaesthesia, emergency and geriatrics. A NOSM graduate, Dr. Spencer practices medicine in several different communities including Timmins, Sault Ste Marie, Chapleau and Elliot Lake.
As a preceptor Dr. Spencer can provide insight in several different areas of medicine and facilities, a key variable for rural medicine.
University of Calgary
Dr. Britton-Foster is a family physician with the Elliot Lake Family Health Team, in addition to being the Chief of Staff and Coroner at St. Joseph’s General Hospital.
He has extended his practice to make himself available to neighbouring First Nation communities, truly embodying rural medicine.
As a preceptor he has much to offer, showcasing his experience in family practice, obstetrics, emergency room care and as a coroner in rural communities over the past 30 plus years.
Queens University
Dr. Matheson, a Queen’s University alumni, has practiced family medicine for over 30 years. He maintains a family practice at the Elliot Lake Family Health Team and works at St. Joseph's General Hospital in the emergency room as well as stress testing.
His experiences are highlighted as a preceptor where he is able to provide guidance on rural medicine.
Outside of work he is an active member of the Elliot Lake community where he has raised three kids.
Queens University (residency)
Dr. Siddiqui is a family physician with the Elliot Lake Family Health Team. Originally from Pakistan, she moved from Toronto to Elliot Lake after completing her residency training at Queen’s University.
As a preceptor she is able to highlight her interests in obstetrics, services related to women health issues, mental health and addictions. Dr. Siddiqui provides a unique insight into rural medicine, cultivated by her career in Elliot Lake.
McMaster University, University of Toronto
New to the North, Dr Culic is an emergency room physician at the St. Joseph’s General Hospital and holds a small family practice at the Elliot Lake Family Health Team. Beginning her 5 year career in Barrie Ontario, Dr. Culic and her family moved to Elliot Lake to pursue rural medicine.
A McMaster University and University of Toronto alumni, Dr. Culic has a fresh perspective of rural medicine that would make her a unique preceptor.
Dalhousie University
Dr. Prescott is a family physician with the Elliot Lake Family Health Team and an assistant professor at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. Growing up on the east coast, he is an alumni of Dalhousie University and has been practicing rural medicine in Elliot Lake for 27 years.
His practice includes clinic work, emergency medicine, stress testing, inpatient care, and some anaesthesia which he is able to showcase as a preceptor. As a teacher for many years, Dr. Prescott looks forward to building the confidence of medical students and residents.
Western University
A long term resident of Elliot Lake and a Western University Alumni, Dr. Wannan is a family physician with the Elliot Lake Family Health Team. Throughout his many years in the medical field, he has exercised skills as a family practitioner, an emergency room physician and occasionally provides obstetric care. Recently he has taken on a physician assistant to better the care he provides to his patients.
He has extended his practice to make himself available to neighbouring First Nation communities, truly embodying rural medicine.

Dr. deBortoli is an alumni of the University of Ottawa who grew up in Elliot Lake. He is a family physician and the Chair with the Elliot Lake Family Health Team as well as Chief of Emergency at St. Joseph’s General Hospital.
As a preceptor Dr. deBortoli provides guidance in family practice, emergency room care, stress testing and anaesthesia.
Outside of work, Dr. deBortoli is a vital member of the community where he is currently raising his two kids.
St George's University
Dr. Purzner is a family physician with the Elliot Lake Family Health Team. He has been practising rural medicine in Elliot Lake since completing medical school at St. George’s University in Grenada and residency training at the University of Manitoba and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.
In addition to his large family practice, Dr. Purzner demonstrates skills in anaesthesia which he is able to share as a preceptor.
McMaster University
As a McMaster University alumni, Dr. Groh is a family physician with the Elliot Lake Family Health Team as well as the Chief of Obstetrics at St. Joseph’s General Hospital.
Throughout her 22 year career Dr. Groh has shown a passion for rural medicine and teaching medical students. As a preceptor she has much to offer, providing insight into family practice, prenatal care, obstetrics and ER practice.
Outside of work Dr. Groh is a vital member of the Elliot Lake community where she is currently raising her three kids.
