About Us

The Northern Ontario Academic Medicine Association (NOAMA) was created to manage, distribute and administer the Alternate Funding Plan (AFP) funding on behalf of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) and the Members. The original AFP created by the MOHLTC and the Ontario Medical Association did not cover the NOSM physician clinical faculty. Therefore a need arose for the NOSM alternate funding plan, which was signed in 2009 providing $7.1 million in annual funding. The NOSM AFP provides funds for clinical teaching, medical research, clinical innovation and recruitment of physicians to Northern Ontario.

The Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) first opened their doors in September of 2005 with a vision of innovative education and research for a healthier North. It’s current success relies on a number of collaborations and partnerships, including important relationships with the aboriginal and francophone communities. Across both campuses, located in Sudbury and Thunder Bay, Ontario, NOSM conveys a distinctive model of distributed, community-engaged, and socially accountable, medical education. Northern communities play an essential role in engaging MD students in order to develop a thorough understanding of life and work in Northern Ontario.
